 Hartford Technologies manufactures an
easy-to-install needle bearing for radial loads
that require a low profile.
A needle bearing reduces friction and transmits
torque most efficiently in applications such as off-highway
and oil patch equipment, drive shafts, outboard engines
and air compressors. A high load needle bearing is specified for
operations involving static loads, low speeds, or oscillation.
The needle bearing shown above is used on a metal strapping tensioner tool
used to strap a metal band around a skid of product. The needle bearing is
located in the headset, at the hinge point. The material for the outer race
and rollers is chrome steel, hardened to Rc 60-62.
Formerly, there was a metal sleeve in the headset. Binding in the headset
was caused by the force required to pull the strapping to secure the load to
the skid. The needle bearing manufactured for the application by Hartford
allowed a smoother rotation of the headset and eliminate the binding. As a
result, a stronger strapping was achieved.
This is just one of the unique needle bearing projects for
Hartford in the packaging industry.

A Drawn Cup Needle Bearing is similar to a standard roller bearing
except for their much smaller diameter-to-length ratio. In most cases,
a hardened shaft acts as the inner race. By controlling the clearance
between the rollers, the rollers are kept parallel to the axis of the shaft.
The low cross section design provides excellent load carrying capacity
while using minimal space.
