Over the last ten years, Hartford Technologies has become one of the leading manufacturers of precision steel rollers. Our precision steel rollers are used in products ranging from mechanical timers to seat track bearings. Also available in most of today's engineered plastics, precision steel rollers can be made in a variety of types of steel to suit the particular needs of the application. Precision steel rollers from Hartford Technologies are available in diameters up to ¾" and in lengths up to 2".

One of the more popular materials for precision steel rollers is chromium steel. Precision steel rollers made from chromium steel offer excellent wear characteristics due to its high hardness capability. In precision bearing applications, precision steel rollers made from chromium steel also offer the highest degree of precision, often maintaining a diameter tolerance of +/- 2 microns.

When corrosion resistance is desired, precision steel rollers made from a stainless steel are often the preferred choice. Precision steel rollers can be made from stainless steels that offer varying degrees of corrosion resistance and strength. The use of non-heat treated stainless steels to produce precision steel rollers, such as type 302 or 304, offers excellent corrosion resistance but only marginal strength and durability. Precision steel rollers made from a heat-treated stainless steel such as type 440 offers excellent strength and durability but reduced corrosion resistance. For precision steel rollers featuring a balance of both, type 420 may be the preferred choice.

For applications where lowest cost is desired, precision steel rollers manufactured from low carbon steel may be the best choice. Because low carbon steel can be case-hardened, it offers good wear characteristics. Unfortunately, precision steel rollers made from low carbon steel offer only minimal corrosion resistance and should be used in applications where they are sealed and well lubricated.

Because of the variety of materials available, precision steel rollers can be made to meet the requirements of most any application. Hartford Technologies Applications Engineering can assist in the proper selection of material for your precision steel roller application.
