Hartford Technologies’ custom all-plastic roller bearing provides superior corrosion resistance and reduced cost when compared to steel or stainless steel equivalents, making it ideal for use in wash-down conveyor systems.  Available in a variety of materials and sizes, the new all-plastic roller bearing can significantly lower both the acquisition and maintenance costs associated with today’s complex systems.  Where several hundred are used, plastic components can significantly reduce total system weight allowing for easier installation and maintenance.

Designers have typically relied on a limited number of bearing material options for wash-down conveyor systems, often at a premium cost.  By utilizing today’s engineered plastics, designers now have another option at a fraction of the cost.  Hartford Technologies’ design team will custom-design rollers specifically for a customer’s system requirements.

Hartford Technologies develops, manufactures, and delivers precision balls, rollers and pins, bearings, modular bearing systems and sub-assemblies for automotive, aerospace, medical, consumer, agriculture and other industries.  Headquartered in Rocky Hill, CT., Hartford Technologies offers complete R&D, manufacturing, metallurgical and testing capabilities to efficiently meet its customers’ needs for advanced designs.  Hartford Technologies is a QS 9000 and ISO 9002-certified company and a Tier I and Tier II automotive supplier.

Hartford Technologies now offers an expanded product line that includes precision pins and rollers for applications where tight tolerances or custom shapes are required.  Applications in automotive, industrial and electronics markets include CV joints, locating pins, linear track rollers, bearings, and fractional motor shafts.

One of Hartford Technologies’ strengths is their unique cold-heading technology which allows the manufacturing of custom rollers without the need for costly secondary operations.  In high-volume applications this can equate to significant cost savings as well as reduced lead times.

Rollers and pins are available in diameters ranging from 1mm to 20mm in lengths of 3mm to 50mm, in a variety of end configurations.  Standard materials include carbon steel, chrome steel, stainless steel, and a variety of plastics to meet the strength and corrosion resistance requirements of most applications.

This broader range of products allows Hartford Technologies to offer expanded support and cost reduction to its customers by providing them deeper sourcing from their existing supplier base.

HIGH-PRECISION GLASS BALLS IDEAL FOR USE IN VALVES, BEARINGS, AND METERING DEVICES

Hartford Technologies offers Precision Glass Balls, also referred to as "beads", with superior corrosion and chemical absorption resistance making them ideal for applications in medical, optical, and food processing equipment.

Precision balls made from glass are approximately one third the weight of those made from stainless steel and can usually be purchased at a lower cost.

In medical applications such as intravenous administration products, resistance to chemical or biological elements is critical and since the metering balls are not subjected to high loads, the use of lower cost glass balls such as those made from soda-lime is ideal.

While stainless steels such as type 316 are highly corrosion resistant, they can still be affected by some chemicals.  Bearings containing glass balls are commonly used in pool and spa pumps and accessories due to their high resistance to chlorine.

Glass balls can be supplied in various colors for identification purposes. Black glass balls are commonly found in instrumentation applications such as flow meters and aircraft turn coordinator gages.

Glass balls are dimensionally stable and can withstand temperatures up to 600 degrees F.  Hartford Technologies’ Precision Glass Balls are available in sizes ranging from 1/32” (0.8mm) through 1-1/4” (31.75mm), in a matte, ground or polished finish, plain or colored, in soda-lime or borosilicate glass.  Balls can be manufactured to meet a 100,000/10,000 clean room standard.  To ensure the highest quality, a unique high-speed visual inspection system 100% inspects the diameter, roundness, and purity of each ball.

LINEAR BEARING ASSEMBLY SPEEDS ASSEMBLY, REDUCES COSTS

Hartford Technologies’ custom modular bearing assemblies combine precision ball or roller bearings with plastic or steel retainers to speed installation and reduce handling and installation costs.  Available in a variety of sizes and materials, assemblies can be designed for most linear sliding applications including seat tracks and draw slides.

In seat track assemblies, it is important for the balls or rollers to maintain adequate spacing to insure proper load distribution.  Early designs relied on the use of several individual spacers combined with several balls or rollers.  This made the assembly process time consuming and inconsistent.  Since the retainer carries no loads, the use of lightweight, inexpensive materials such as plastics are ideal for these applications.  Incorporating multiple balls or rollers into a single retainer produces more consistent quality and significant savings in installation time.

All Hartford Technologies modular bearing assemblies are custom designed using 3-D CAD software, taking the customer’s requirements from concept through production while producing a no-compromise fit in their application.

As a global supplier to the automotive industry, Hartford Technologies utilizes its many manufacturing resources to produce designs in most materials and configurations.  In addition to their precision ball and roller manufacturing, Hartford Technologies also offers capability in injection molding, cold forming, precision machining, and metal stamping to provide customers with a seamless solution.

HARTFORD TECHNOLOGIES RECEIVES SUPPLIER TEAMWORK AWARD

Hartford Technologies, an ISO-9000-2000 certified provider of precision balls and engineered bearing systems, has received the Supplier Cross Functional Teamwork Award from a leading major medical systems manufacturer.

The award recognizes Hartford Technologies' efforts in meeting their need for a dramatic increase for glass balls with a frost or ground finish that are used in IV lines to regulate flow of medicine and fluids.  Previously, they used a clear glass ball that could be more difficult to see.

"We had feedback about the clear glass balls because some assemblers had difficulty seeing the balls and needed to ensure themselves that the balls were in the IC line assemblies.  Also the balls would sometimes fall on the assembly table and were difficult to find by assemblers," said the Director of Supply Chain Management.  "When Hartford Technologies understood our requirements, they worked hand in hand with our people to develop the product we need while reducing the lead time from 28 days to just seven.  This was all done without adding additional cost," she said.

To meet the requirement, Hartford Technologies had to double its production and capacity, said Alan Przybylski, the company's Director of Purchasing.  "We put together a team of engineers and quality assurance experts and through experimenting with load sizes and grinding wheels, we were able to go from two machines to four while reducing production from one load in three weeks to one load each week."  As a result Hartford Technologies shipments have increased 10 fold as compared to three years ago.

PRECISION GLASS BALLS PROVIDE SOLUTIONS, SAVINGS

Due to significant increases in the cost of nickel, a key element in 300-series stainless steels, Hartford Technologies’ Precision Glass Balls are providing the practical and affordable alternative for applications where corrosion resistance is critical.  Precision Glass Balls are particularly effective in applications where corrosion resistance is a primary requirement and where extreme thermal changes are not a factor.

Like 300-series stainless steel, glass is highly resistant to corrosion and chemical absorption, and it is non-magnetic. Glass balls are ideal for valve applications in medical devices, instrumentation gauges, pumps, water treatment bearings, roll-on applicators, and many other uses in a variety of fields.

Most 300-series stainless steels contain between 8 and 14 percent nickel, a material whose recent availability and cost have been volatile.  In contrast, the cost of glass has remained stable, largely because its primary element is “silica,” or sand, which remains in abundant supply.   Hartford Technologies manufactures glass balls from  soda-lime and borosilicate materials.  Soda-lime balls are recommended for applications requiring hardness and excellent resistance to corrosion.  In applications where high temperatures and sudden temperature changes are also expected, borosilicate glass is recommended for its additional resistance to chemical corrosion and temperature fluctuation.

Hartford Technologies’ Precision Glass Balls can be supplied to the same diameter and “sphericity” tolerances as 300-series stainless steels in smooth, matte, and polished finishes, in plain or other color, and in sizes ranging from 1/32” (0.8mm) through 1-1/4” (31.75mm).  Balls can also be manufactured to meet a 100,000/10,000 clean room standard.  To further ensure quality, the company’s unique high-speed visual inspection system evaluates the diameter, roundness, and purity of each ball.
